October23

Qurat-u-lain Baluch has rendered a beautiful version of this song by Abida Parween for coke studio. The original nazm was meant to capture the emotions fet by the divided east Pakistan – west Pakistan population, after the 1971 war which saw the creation of Bangladesh. It has been penned down by Naseer Turabi

These days, it has been synonymous with the memories that remain after a divorce.

My translation of certain words is in english…

humsafar: fellow traveller ( used  for spouse )

humnavai: the feeling of being together,

adawatein : anger

tagaful: inconsiderateness

rangish: anguish

bewafai : infidelity

shab-e-firaq : the night of separation

Shikasta dil : defeat of heart

shikasta pai : defeat of feet ( to give up walking )

( Naseer Turai, 1971 (?) )

This song is stuck in my mind, and refuses to go unless I pen down the lyrics:

I wish that I had known
in that first minute we met
the unpayable debt
that I owed you

Because you’d been abused
by the bone that refused you
and you hired me
to make up for that

You said you hated my tone
it made you feel so alone
so you told me
I ought to be leaving

You made me sleep all uneven
and I didn’t believe them
when they told me that there
was no saving you…

( The Antlers, 2009 )

Eikon – I will follow you

October25

There’s a hunger in my heart,
a hunger in my soul for you Lord
and it grows and it grows
and it feeds me like its never fed me before
There’s a hunger in my heart,
there’s a fever in my bones for you Lord
and it grows and it grows
and it feeds me it feeds me like never before

I, will follow you

(Eikon – I will follow you)
